Horse Heaven Hills Recreation Area BLM Recreation Management Area
Sometime in late 2023, I noticed the addition of numerous new POTA sites, many of which are near my home. I decided to head up to the Horse Heaven Hills BLM area because it’s near my home and I also wanted to scope it out as a potential Field Day site. I had hoped to be the first to activate this new location, but KJ7WNV beat me to it by less than a day.
The drive up is on gravel road and operating sites near the top of the ridge were plentiful. I like that because getting my antenna up that high really seems to pay dividends. This was no exception– I made contacts in the UK and Italy. It was also the first time I used HAMRS to log my QSOs directly as I made them. That was a huge time saver, and I love the QSO maps it generates. My only real complaint about HAMRS is that it doesn’t let me import logs (n.b.: this is no longer the case) , so making a map for previous activations requires using qsomap.com, which I find awkward although perfectly usable.
